Tate St Ives, Cornwall Create Club and RESIDENT
Working with a multi-academy trust and a community youth group
From autumn 2023 to July 2026, Tate St Ives (TSI) is forming creative partnerships with the staff and young people from YAY! (Young and Yourself), a community youth group for LGBTQ+ young people, and Hayle Academy, St Ives School and Cape Cornwall School, all part of Truro and Penwith Academy Trust (T&PAT).
Young people across both strands are working in depth with lead artists and the TSI team through five areas of practice that are building confidence, creativity and transferable skills, and supporting mental health and wellbeing. In the first year, inspired by the collections and exhibitions at TSI, young people from T&PAT were invited to form a fortnightly artist led ‘Create Club’. They established their own studio collective and worked towards creating an alternative gallery resource for teenagers, launched in Summer 2024.
Young people from YAY! embarked on a youth residency – RESIDENT – at TSI. They were invited to explore, disrupt and take ownership of the gallery spaces and practice, creating artwork and interventions that opened up TSI as a space for other 14-19-year-olds.
